Hope this helps and answers your question.I got a new iPhone X, and set it up from the most recent backup of my older iPhone over Wi-Fi. For me it’s not worth it to use it on my Mac. The next question you might have is why don’t I? Because the iCloud app on a Mac does the same thing, but it backs up your data directories on the Mac, so if you have a lot of BS, it will eat up your storage. Instead of emailing it to yourself, just save it to the iCloud Drive and it will be accessible from your Mac in that folder (if you actually set that up, I don’t use it myself). let’s say you’re writing a paper on your phone and want to finish it up on your new shiny Mac when you get home. It uses the fore mentioned iCloud service, to say. Like google drive or mega, but it’s private. And iCloud Drive is a app or just a dedicated direct save spot accessible from any connected iOS/macOS device. This is why Apple offers bigger online storage for a couple of dollars a month for a full backup for heavy phone users. Thus saving your ass every night while you sleep (unless you have a ton of text messages/photos and videos these items kill that little 5 gig of space). The ICloud backup will automatically back up after hours if your phone is connected to a WiFi hotspot and charging. That online storage is used for backing up your app data, (if your phone data is small enough) phone backups for data recovery purposes. By default it includes 5 gigs of online storage. ICloud is a service that Apple forces you to have an account for. Personally, I pay for the $0.99 50GB plan and it covers everything I need. These use the same storage space as your backups, but are separate.įor most people, the free 5GB is not enough. ICloud Drive is where your files (text documents, PDFs, etc) are stored. So if you have backup of your device turned off, your photos will still backup unless you turn that off specifically as well. Interesting to note here is that your photos backup is separate from everything else. You can also toggle all these in settings. ICloud backup takes your data from your devices and saves it in the cloud so that you can restore that data to a new device, or your current device if for some reason you have to run a factory reset.įor example, an iCloud backup of your iPhone would include your messages, notes, safari browsing data, app placement, wallpaper, etc. iCloud backup and iCloud Drive are two parts of it. So first of all, they are all included in your free plan, and all share that same 5GB you get for free. /r/AppleMusic for discussion of Apple's music streaming service./r/iOSSetups for iOS wallpapers, setups, and apps. /r/iPhoneXSMax for XS Max specific issues./r/AppleSwap if you want to trade devices!.Keep an eye on temporarily free or discounted apps on /r/AppHookup!.Your iPhone broke?
